L'Oreal Infallible Eye Shadow in Smoldering Plum Swatches and Review

I recently hauled some buy-one-get-one half off products at Ulta and this eye shadow was one of them. Retailing for around $6 (depending on location), I snagged this little pot of purple at the discount.

LOREAL INFALLIBLE EYESHADOW

Smoldering Plum caught my eye, even though we are fast approaching spring, I am still hanging on tightly to the winter colors. I figured this might be a good crease shadow.

SMOLDERING PLUM

These shadows are packed tightly, and I feel would have a looser consistency if not for the plastic stopper in the package to keep the powder pressed. These are rather messy once you remove that, and I honestly find this shadow a bit of a pain....but I persevered on because of the color.
SMOLDERING PLUM

The darkened plum mixed with red glitter really got my hopes up. This is not a new shade, but I felt it may be something really unique in my collection. I did get a little OCD and clean around the packaging after taking this picture because I can't stand the messiness).

This is the initial swatch, done with a finger and no primer. I wasn't as 'wowed' as I hoped I would be, but the red glitter is still pretty apparent. The good news is this goes on smoothly and with little fallout, despite the consistency.

The bad news is that this is the best swatch of the product. It looks muddied on my eyelids and although it does wear all day with a good primer, it is nothing special in an actual look. Now I wish I would have picked out another color instead. But---all hope is not lost. I try to never give up on a product, and will continue experimenting, maybe placing this over a black creme base.

Happy Superbowl Sunday!

  1. I really like the color! Too bad the eyeshadow isn't meeting your expectations. Hopefully using a black creme base, will make it the eyeshadow better!

  2. I had a trouble with these shadows too. They feel great, but don't apply well. Patchy! I had bought three shades. I return whatever I don't like the very next day b/c already I spend too much money on makeup as it is, so try to save where I can. But you are a true beauty enthusiast b/c you're going to make it work! ;) Maybe you can try it on a similar dark creme shadow. Do you have any? One by MAC, Sigma, and Makeup Geek comes to mind.

  3. I find these way too glittery for me, plus they don't stay on my lid at all. :( I like the red glitter too though!

    1. Yeah I only wore it as an accent color during testing, but I think as a whole wash of color, it wouldn't fare well, the red still enchants me as well!

  4. I hope you can get this to work for you! I bought this shade and I love it, but that might be because of the lid color shade I use with it. On it's own I don't think id like it as much

    1. What shade do you use with it if you don't mind me asking? I tried it in the crease with a nude color and it got a little muddy on me. I love the shade and really want it to find its true potential haha

  6. I think these are kind of intermediate as far as ease of application is concerned and I'm not there yet, lol. They're so pigmented and pretty, though! I think I had this one in my untrieds and got rid of it in a destashing moment because I'm just not brave enough, lol. I wore the dark green one a couple times (and received compliments lol) but never felt vomfortable enough to do it again. Maybe that'll change :) It is a bummer this one isn't anything special, I had high hopes that you'd work your magic with it :)

  8. I have this one and I'm not in love. I find that it gets kind of crumbly on lids as the day goes on - I use a cream shadow as a base, though, and not a primer.

    1. Thanks for the tip Larie, I definitely think a cream might be better.
