NYX Matte Lipstick in Alabama: The Perfect Red for Christmas!

Hey Pandas!

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa or whatever you celebrate-- I hope you make tons of memories with family and friends!

If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably noticed I've been out merry-making myself and not so subtly ignoring my blog....

I just recently finished yet another semester of grad school (when will it end?!?) and I had to celebrate the new freedom...and now that things have calmed down, expect a lot more from PrettyPanda. Looks, Reviews, other quirky things---I have it all planned out.

Before I ramble too much more, I just wanted to say I missed you all, and here is a new find (and a cheap one) if you are looking for that last-minute holiday party red!

NYX Matte Lipstick in Alabama ($5.99---and Ulta is doing a buy one product get the other 50% off!) is something I have been eyeing for some time. I like their matte formula and this is a smidge darker than the normal cherry red. I love the name too--anything named after the South, I am into. Anyone here from Alabama? This is totally TOTALLY a must, haha.

The packaging is not my favorite. It is a black tube that is clear in the middle, which allows you to see the color, but looks rather cheap. Luckily I am not here for the packaging with NYX. Here for this pretty color alone!

This is a pretty forgiving matte formula. I just popped on a bit of chapstick and swiped this over (yes, it defeats some of the matte purpose, but its more comfortable). When worn alone, I find it almost has the texture of those coveted Lime Crime Velveteens, and this is a pretty close dupe shade for Red Velvet.

I like the slightly darker tone, and you can layer it to bring out the slight hint of brown in the coloring. Lasts about 3-4 hours---not amazing---but just enough to get you through that party.

Cheap price, okay formula (comfy matte but not terribly long lasting), but a stunning color. My bargain pick for red lips for the rest of this season!)

Thanks for reading, welcome back, and can't wait to chat!

  4. Yaay!!! Hey Margo!!! I missed you my friend!!! Happy Holidays and hope your semester wrapped up smoothly. You have the ideal lip shape (Disney Princess-like) for these rich berry and red shades you review. You should definitely try the Sonia Kashuk matte red then. :) I saw matte cream glosses in the berry-red shade range by Essence at ULTA and thought of you. You should check those out. I will be reviewing the BITE Cashmere Gloss soon and think the two are quite comparable.

Looking forward to your review of the BITE--and I saw the Essence ones and think I will go back for them after the holiday chaos. because of your SK review I put it on my list!!!

  5. Congrats on one more semester down! I love these darker reds for winter. I'm totally not in love with NYX's packaging but a matte that behaves better than Ruby Woo is always worth a try, in my book. And I, too, am okay with demi-matte if it means my lips are well moisturized. That middle of the mouth wear ring that true mattes amplify drives me batty, lol.

    1. Thanks Liesl!!! Yeah Ruby Woo is a PITA--- this has the wear down of more of a traditional lipstick versus a matte. You sacrifice a little bit of the crazy matteness, but I think its worth it :)
